“NEW YORK (Reuters) — Monster Worldwide Inc., parent of jobs Web site Monster.com, reported lower-than-expected quarterly earnings Monday and announced a restructuring plan that includes cutting 800 jobs, or 15 percent of its full-time staff.”

Best of the Worst, Part One

July 22nd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Random stuff

I was doing some browsing around today on my IP for the blog (http://www.myipneighbors.com/) and found some sites that defy explaination (but I’ll give it a shot anyways).

This one disturbs me on all levels because A) someone felt strongly enough about tags staying off Beanie Babies to make a public statement about it and B) they did it in flash which means that this took them longer than 0.03 seconds to cook up as a mere joke. Furthermore, this site hasn’t been modified since ‘03 and hosting fees are still being paid to protect this important idea.

Designer-Software.com

Ok, I get it.. You make custom software. That’s cool. But please leave the idea of ‘interface design’ to someone else because it’s pretty clear you don’t have a motherfucking clue what it actually is. The fact that your site was last updated in 2007 scares the hell out of me because it looks like it was first put together in 1997. I’d have more respect for everyone involved if it had simply been left to rot.

Thanks pal, but I’ll take my chances over giving you my personal information anyday of the week.

Drove my first hybrid.. and forgot to turn it off

Being the geek that I am, I have to admit that I actually enjoyed driving the Prius and wouldn’t mind some more time behind the wheel. Admittedly, the styling is pretty gay but the fluidity of operation is impressive and the gauges are fun to watch.

The only problem is that if you don’t have any instruction on how to drive it you’ll probably end up doing something stupid. Once the girls bolted out of the car and headed upstairs the other night it took me a good two minutes to figure out that I had to push the “Park” button to take it out of a forward ‘gear’. Being that there were no keys, I figured I was done and simply locked it up.

Whoops. Turns out I actually had to use the On/Off button to shut everything down and it was running in the parking garage for a good 10 hours, all by itself. Sorry Sarah!

I think they’re making fun of me..

No Mr. Bond.. I expect you to die!

July 12th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Health

It’s been brought to my attention (in more ways than one) that it may be time to get my arse into shape. I’m not overweight, but the years of fatty foods, smoking and drinking are starting to take their toll, mentally and physically. The fact that I’ll be thirty this year doesn’t really help much either.

Here’s the kicker though- I hate ‘mindless’ exercise. Bamboo shoots in a fingernail is more appealing than going for a run, and is probably a large part of why I’m naturally inclined towards sitting in front of a computer for weeks at a time. It’s just really hard to motivate myself to be active in a way that doesn’t end with me accomplishing something in the end- if there is a goal I’ll use everything I have to get there (and more) with no complaints.

So my quest for physical improvement is going to center around a three-part process that actually appeals to my 12 year-old inner child: Special Agent / Special Ops training. Yeah, it sounds a bit crazy.. but I have no desire to become a bulked-up gym rat or some crazy marathon runner; I just want to be physically active in a way that has defined standards and also serves to stimulate me mentally.

Part One: Meeting the FBI Physical Fitness Test Requirements

Part Two: Completing a certificate or equivalent in one or more of the following: Marksmanship (firearms.. sweet!), Driving (racing school.. sweet!), Communications, Foreign Language, etc. I haven’t quite sorted this out but the gist is that it involves mentally challenging activities that require a special skill set. More on this later as it’s one of things I’m really looking forward to.

Part Three: A modified version of the Navy SEAL training program. Clearly I’m not going to build an obstacle course or go for a two-mile ocean swim but if I focus on the basics here I think I can accomplish a good chunk of it.

So there you have it. I’m going to spend the next couple of weeks hashing out my process and ditching the smoking thing, finally, forever. Training begins August 1st.

Live Earth, Big Waste

I’ve been wondering why half of the parking lot here has been occupied by Satellite trucks, generators, catering trucks, mobile offices and random people coming in and out- they’re running the Internet broadcast through the datacenter.

I’m figuring there are a few more setups like this throughout the world. The concerts look pretty impressive as well, all NINE of them. The two billion people tuning in (no doubt they are all using hydrogen-powered televisions) should find it to be an entertaining event.

I’m all for leaving a very small footprint on the earth but anyone who has been to a concert knows how much garbage can be left behind and holding it in open venues only exponentially increases demand for things like water (or beer!) and all of that inevitably travels through our waste system at some point.

So we’re sucking up more energy, water, fuel (all those people working in my parking lot have to get there somehow, the artists, production staff and attendees have to get to the venues) and we’re doing this to promote conservation? Awesome.. maybe we should light a few forests on fire so that people really get the idea about natural resources.

I’m left wondering what happened to the Bed-In concept that Lennon and Ono perfected- it wouldn’t cost much, wouldn’t hurt the Earth and the message would probably reach the same amount of people (while still feeding the Ego of Mr. Al Gore). Of course, that would mean we’d get to see just how incredibly inefficient his own home is, which is a stark contrast to the personal home of President Bush, which actually utilizes green technology AND creates more power than it uses.

Apparently the mantra is do as I say, not as I do. Have fun watching the hypocrisy.. I mean concerts.

..before my head is screwed back on straight. Vegas was awesome however; that city never ceases to amaze me (which is a pretty tall order) and I was lucky enough to come back with most of my savings intact. What more can you ask for?
